2) Ponder onWHY SANE WOMEN WIG OUT

More and more perfectly healthy young women are

Making themselves sick… with worry. Here, five things

You may be obsessing over, and whether it’s best

to fret or forget it. By Daren Eller

Twenty-four-year-old Jean Cross, a financial writer, had just broken up with her boyfriend of six months when she felt bombarded by an avalanche of magazine articles and TV movies about young women with AIDS. “My ex and hadn’t been diligent about using condoms, and suddenly I started to question how much I really knew about his sexual past,” remembers Cross. That thought snowballed into full-blown panic; and soon cross was convinced that every ailment she had - from a yeast infection to the flu – Was a sign that her immune system was failing.

Cross is far from the only young woman to let her imagination run wild. Thanks to myriad medical Web sites and awareness campaigns, young women today are better informed about their health than ever before. But they’re also more paranoid about it being in jeopardy. “On the positive side, having information available makes people more cognizant of disease and encourages them to take an active role in maintaining their health,’’ says Denise Sur, M.D., an assistant clinical professor at the UCLA School of Medicine. “But it can definitely create unnecessary anxiety.”

And while some of those fears are legitimate, others are phobias triggered by a news story about a sick celebrity, the discovery that a friend has breast cancer, an unusually painful menstrual period – anything that plants the idea that something could be amiss.

To help you keep your sanity in check, we’ve asked experts to pinpoint five of the biggest health worries young women have, then give us the straight story on how common they are and what measures you can take to safeguard yourself.
