Chapter 2

Concerns for the natural environment have moved up on everyone's agenda over the past three decades, as rapid population increases and economic development have strained the world's forests, farmlands, atmosphere, rivers and oceans. The UN has taken the lead through its efforts to safeguard our natural heritage. This is an area where the UN's global reach and ability to act as an honest broker has produces impressive results.

Many UN organizations participate in projects or programmes that include an environmental aspect, among them are:

· UNEP (the United Nations Environmental Program)

It sets the world's environmental agenda, promotes the environmental dimension of sustainable development and is an authoritative advocate of the global environment

· UNESCO (the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization)

It has a varied mission involving education, research and public outreach in science, protection of cultural and natural heritage

· WMO (the World Meteorological Organization)

It is a specialized agency that provides current scientific information about the atmosphere, freshwaters and climate
